BARREN SPRING

BARREN SPRING, written by Lysandre Mbappé, and based on the renowned piece: Spring Awakening, by the German master playwright Wedekind.

Directed by Giles Foreman.

The original masterpiece explores the devastating repressive approach to parenting in late 19th Century Germany. As Freud and Jung discover the neurotic effects of suppressed sexuality, and the demonisation of nature by christian doctrine – the visionary Wedekind attacks those artificial taboos that destroy youth when it attempts to bloom as nature wills.

“We enter a contemporary world that has exploded all of those taboos and swung in the opposite direction. A world of lost youth and innocence – a borderless domain in which parents wish to be friends, discuss openly their intimacy, and participate in that of their children; in which beauty and pornographically-modelled physical perfection is paramount. A world in which social media and internet imagery dictate how one should view the world. A materialistic, borderless quagmire in which, once again, we find nature mutilated, and childhood destroyed”.
